Plans to introduce walk-in healthcare units in the UK, mainly operated by nurses, has led to a call for the training of nurses to include work traditionally carried out by doctors. The government is backing the introduction of nurse-led health centres and seeking applications from primary care groups to establish pilot schemes. Other schemes are promoting the use of nurses, with some operating a policy whereby up to 60% of patients are dealt with directly by practice nurses.

Nurses should have an awareness of genetic services and counselling, in order to help their patients adequately, according to the education commission of the UKCC. According to a nursing practice adviser from the Royal College of Nursing, Rosie Wilkinson, knowledge of genetic diseases is variable although some nurses know a lot about certain genetic diseases, such as sickle cell disorders among African or Afro-Caribbean patients and cystic fibrosis.

Article Abstract:
The UK Audit Commission has condemned the management and treatment of bank or agency nursing staff in the National Health Service claiming many are given little or no support which could patients and themselves at risk.
