Metastatic renal-cell carcinoma: what causes occasional dramatic regressions?
Article Abstract:
More research is needed before immunotherapy with cytokines can be recommended for patients with a type of kidney cancer called renal-cell carcinoma. The primary tumor is often removed surgically but 25% to 30% of patients have metastatic disease at the time of treatment. Some untreated patients have gone into remission, leading physicians to believe that immunotherapy might be beneficial. However, two 1998 studies of interferon and interleukin-2 indicate that these immune system proteins may not benefit patients. Combining interferon and interleukin-2 may be beneficial but also causes serious side effects.
