Nation must face organ donation in a meaningful way
Article Abstract:
The U.S. must develop an efficient way to ensure that potential cadaveric organ donors can make their wishes known and their organs available. A reluctance to confront the family of a loved one who has recently passed away and the failure of many individuals to indicate their desires about organ donation have resulted in a significant shortage of available organs. In 1997, 48,000 people are on waiting lists for organs, with only 4,000 organ donors available. Three possible options for facilitating organ donation exist: "presumed consent", "required request" and "mandated choice".
