Abnormal thyroid function test results in patients taking salsalate
Article Abstract:
Patients with rheumatological conditions who take the anti-inflammatory drug salsalate may have thyroid function test abnormalities that indicate they have hypothyroidism. Thyroid function tests are a series of tests that measure the production of certain hormones by the thyroid gland. Of 14 patients from 39 to 92 years old treated with salsalate, all had significantly lower blood concentrations of the hormone thyroxine. Patients treated less than three weeks with salsalate had a decrease in blood levels of the hormone thyrotropin. But blood levels of thyrotropin returned to normal in patients treated longer than three weeks. Several patients had a lower total concentration of the hormone triiodothyronine. Individuals who have hypothyroidism produce lower levels of thyroid gland hormones. Despite abnormal thyroid function test results, none of the patients had hypothyroidism. Five patients had other pre-existing thyroid gland disorders.

Shatter resistance of spectacle lenses
Article Abstract:
Spectacle lenses that meet national standards for shatter resistance may still pose a threat to the eyes. Researchers fired 5 different projectiles at 7 lenses that met national standards for shatter resistance. The projectiles were air gun pellets, golf ball, tennis balls, lacrosse balls and baseballs. A total of 348 impacts revealed that lenses made of polycarbonate resisted all impacts, but this was not true for high-index plastic, allyl resin plastic, heat tempered glass and chemically tempered glass.
