New Perspectives on Glaucoma
Article Abstract:
Research on glaucoma may lead to treatments that can prevent the damage caused by this disease. Glaucoma occurs when the pressure inside the eye increases. This damages the optic nerve and eventually causes blindness. Most treatments are focused on lowering the pressure inside the eye. However, researchers have collected evidence that retinal cells are damaged in other ways. Excess glutamine can be toxic to nerve cells and glaucoma may be an autoimmune disease. These new findings will lead to more effective treatments.

Genes involved in the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma: In search of the Holy Grail
Article Abstract:
A genomewide scan is performed to identify genetic loci that control intraocular pressure (IOP). The genomewide scan has provided evidence that a quantitative trait locus might affect elevated IOP and might colocalize with blood pressure loci, suggesting a principal risk factor for primary open-angle glaucoma and quantitative trait influencing the development of disease.

The role of X inactivation and cellular mosaicism in women's health and sex-specific diseases
Article Abstract:
The effects of X-linked mutations and cellular mosaicism in women's health and sex-specific diseases are discussed. Mosaicism for the X chromosome proteome plays a major role in determining a female's disease response while cellular mosaicism contributes to physiological diversity as it provides an increased repertoire of expressed X-linked genes.
