New standard steps up foot protection
Article Abstract:
The American National Standards Institute approved a revised version of ANSI Z41, which defines protective footwear performance requirements and testing methods, on Apr 4, 1991. ANSI Z41 stipulates performance standards for static dissipative and conductive footwear. Testing standards revisions include the establishment of three footwear impact ratings and a raise in compression test safety margins. Compliance with the standard, which is on a voluntary basis, is signified by a 'ANSI Z41 PT '91' label on products and is not expected to produce major costs for manufacturers.

EC '92: here comes a new set of rules
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) will become a 'United States of Europe' by the end of 1992. As a sovereign government, the EC will formulate common economic, social, and industrial laws and standards for its member states. The new EC laws on international trade will have great implications for EC trade with the US. The new trade rules and industrial standards will be different from present regulations. The EC should assure its trading partners that these new rules will not be an excuse for restraint of trade.
