Nurse practitioners managing anticoagulant clinics
Article Abstract:
The number of referrals to anticoagulant clinics in the U.K. is steadily increasing, both for surgical prophylaxis and atrial fibrillation. To solve the problem of rising numbers, the Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, England, appointed a nurse practitioner to lead the service and to assume many of the duties traditionally undertaken by doctors. Studies show that the nurse-led service cut patient waiting times and managed patients' problems as effectively as the previous doctor-led service.

Care in pre-admission clinics
Article Abstract:
It is accepted that orthopaedics needs a pre-admission clinic to assess patients and to prepare them for possible surgery. A newly established pre-admission clinic led by a nurse practitioner is evaluated. The clinic's main aim is to minimise patient waiting time, communicate information to patients and improve the admission process. The evaluation shows that a pre-admission clinic coordinated by an orthopaedic nurse can be of great benefit to patient education.
