No news about the ozone layer is bad news
Article Abstract:
The harmful effects of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) was proposed in 1974, while the ozone hole was discovered in 1985. However, very little research has been undertaken to determine the biological effects of ultraviolet-B (UVB) light, due to lack of funding. Government, unaware that present CFC levels can harm the ozone layer until the 21st century, has the mistaken notion that CFC phaseout through international agreements and domestic legislation can solve the problem. Projects aimed at UVB radiation baseline data were turned down and scientific conferences on the matter went unfunded.

Rio starts environmental conversation
Article Abstract:
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 sought to strike a balance between raising living standards and preserving the environment. Conference participants managed to come up with binding and non-binding agreements that promise to influence environmental and economic trends despite their weak policy demands. These agreements include the Convention on Climate Change, Convention on Biological Diversity, Agenda 21, the Rio Declaration and a set of principles on forests authored by nongovernmental organizations.

Third-World countries strive for "Safety First"
Article Abstract:
Safety and health awareness vary greatly in developing countries. In India, for example, the government is beginning to invest huge sums to promote occupational health and safety. However, some industries continue to relegate the issue to the background in favor of economic interests. One of the major contributions to the increasing safety awareness in the country is the assistance provided by industrialized nations and international groups. Surprisingly, the US is just beginning to concern itself with international safety issues.
