Number of sexual partners and health lifestyle of adolescents: use of the AMA Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services to address a basic research question
Article Abstract:
Teenagers who have more than one sexual partner may engage in other risky behaviors as well. Researchers analyzed data on health risk behaviors in 946 white, African-American and Hispanic teenagers who were part of a long-term study. Twenty percent of the girls and 36% of the boys had three or more sexual partners in the previous year. Those with three or more sexual partners were more likely to engage in other risky behaviors including drug and alcohol use, risky driving and driving without seat belts. Teenage girls were less likely to exercise or to eat a healthy diet.

Adolescents Who Use the Emergency Department as Their Usual Source of Care
Article Abstract:
Many poor teenagers use the emergency department (ED) of a local hospital as their only source of health care. This was the conclusion of a survey of 6,748 teenagers. About 5% of the teens used an ED as their only source of health care. This translates into approximately 1.5 million teens in the US who use an ED as their only source of health care. These teens were more likely to be poor, African-American, and to live in a rural area. They were also more likely to engage in risky behaviors, be depressed or have a history of physical or sexual abuse.

The Potential Role of an Adult Mentor in Influencing High-Risk Behaviors in Adolescents
Article Abstract:
Teenagers who have an adult mentor are less likely to engage in risky behaviors. This was the conclusion of a survey of 294 teenagers who sought care at an outpatient adolescent health service. Teens who had an adult mentor were half as likely to smoke heavily, carry a weapon, use illegal drugs, or have sex with more than one partner. However, an adult mentor had no effect on alcohol use.
