Nursing care for jaundice
Article Abstract:
Jaundice is due to failure at some stage of the bilirubin excretory system. Bilirubin is the pigment left following the breakdown of haemoglobin. Jaundice may be due to a problem in the liver, which normally extracts bilirubin from the blood, or it may be due to a problem before or after this stage. Nursing care of the jaundiced patient will relate to the cause of the problem. Nurses caring for patients with hepatic illnesses may be giving analgesics for viral hepatitis or monitoring fluids and electrolytes following surgery.

Excessive consumption of alcohol can result in diseases of the liver, gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, nervous system, and impotence. Drinking has also be associated with the aetiology of cancer.
