Nursing elderly people: the keys to success
Article Abstract:
Nursing older people demands a range of unique skills. The key element in caring for older people is promoting functional ability and preventing deterioration. It is vital that nurses work with other professionals, along with carers and relatives, to ensure that the many different needs of older people are properly met. In environments where there is no doctor readily available, such as a nursing home, nurses must be proactive in ensuring that care continues without a doctor being involved.

Health-care delivery includes assessment of older people and nurses have the opportunity to be more centrally involved. Nurses must therefore clearly understand assessment of older people and where it would be applicable. Assessment is defined by the RCN as a way of collating information about an individual and making decisions about their health and care based on that information.

Nurses in nursing homes caring for the terminally ill should follow five principles of palliative care. These are focusing on quality of life, taking a holistic stance, involving family and close friends, respecting the wishes and independence of the patient, and placing an emphasis on collaboration between family and professionals.
