Nursing shortfall in sight
Article Abstract:
Nurses are generally positive about the new UK government's approach to wage bargaining and salary levels in the profession. However, there is growing concern about recruitment and retention of nurses. There were only 36,000 nursing students in 1996, from more than 71,000 in 1985, and there is little potential to recruit among people who are already qualified but have left the profession. There is also concern about the growing age of the nursing workforce.

Future trends
Article Abstract:
The number of people entering UK general nurse training has fallen to just below 15,000 from more than 24,000 between 1982 and 1992, according to the English National Board (ENB). This is attributed to the decision to phase out the training of enrolled nurses in the 1980s. Other factors are the increasing change in the skill-mix and lack of funds, allowing an increased proportion of unqualified staff to qualified staff.

Good cause for complaint: with one community health council already pulling out of the new NHS complaints system and others concerned about a lack of resources and training, what are its chances of success?
Article Abstract:
The new NHS complaints system aimed to give community health councils (CHCs) a significant role in supporting potential complainants. However Salford CHC has already withdrawn from the local resolution stage due to lack of resources to handle complaints. Other CHCs may withdraw unless extra funding is forthcoming.
