Observations of intrapartum fetal activities
Article Abstract:
Monitoring fetal breathing during labor may be a useful indicator of fetal health. Fetal breathing, hiccups and fetal body movements were monitored in 28 fetuses during delivery. All pregnancies were considered low-risk, all fetuses were delivered spontaneously and none of the mothers received anesthesia or medication. Breathing movements were detected in 76% of the fetuses during early labor and in 90% during advanced labor. Overall, fetal breathing movements were not observed in 16% of the fetuses, and fetal movements also were not detected in 16% of the fetuses. Fetal breathing movements were always detected when the placental membranes were intact. No breathing movements were detected in six of the 22 observations in which the membranes had ruptured. Rupture of the membranes was a better indicator of absent fetal breathing movements than either stage of labor or size of the cervix.

The incidence of cerebral palsy in tested and untested perinates
Article Abstract:
Assessing the status of a fetus using fetal biophysical profile scoring may reduce the risk of cerebral palsy. The fetal biophysical profile uses several physiological characteristics to estimate whether the fetus will require resuscitation and intensive care when delivered. Researchers analyzed the medical records of 84,947 infants born between 1987 and 1991, 26,290 of whom were tested before birth using the fetal biophysical profile score. The incidence of cerebral palsy in those who were tested was substantially lower than in those who were not tested.

Fetal death after normal biophysical profile score: an eighteen-year experience
Article Abstract:
The biophysical profile score may produce false-negative results. This score is used to estimate the health of the fetus. Over an 18-year period, 65 out of 86,955 fetuses who had a normal score died. Usually, the cause of death occurred after the last normal score.
