Occult Vitamin D Deficiency in Postmenopausal US Women With Acute Hip Fracture
Article Abstract:
Many postmenopausal women may have unrecognized vitamin D deficiency. This could increase their risk of a bone fracture. Researchers measured vitamin D levels in 98 postmenopausal women admitted to a hospital for hip replacement. Thirty had a hip fracture and 17 had osteoporosis. The women with a hip fracture had lower vitamin D levels than the 17 women with osteoporosis and the 51 women who did not have osteoporosis or a hip fracture. They also had higher levels of parathyroid hormone, which regulates the amount of calcium in bones.

Risk of subsequent fracture after low-trauma fracture in men and women
Article Abstract:
A study aims to examine absolute as well as relative refracture risks following initial osteoporotic fracture in men and women. Evidence suggests that after an initial low-trauma fracture, absolute risk of subsequent fracture is similar for both men and women, and that the increased risk occurs for virtually all clinical fractures and persists for up to 10 years.
