Community survey of shoulder disorders in the elderly to assess the natural history and effects of treatment
Article Abstract:
Shoulder pain is a common complaint among the elderly and causes considerable disability, but treatment achieves little improvement. A group of 644 elderly residents of Cambridge, England were screened for shoulder disorders. Of the 136 individuals with a shoulder disorder, 108 were available for follow-up three years later. The most common diagnoses among this group were rotator cuff tendonitis, rotator cuff rupture, rotator cuff degeneration or impingement, and osteoarthritis of the shoulder. In the follow-up group, 60% had been treated with a steroid injection, physiotherapy, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Overall, 74% had persisting problems, of whom 67% had shown no improvement or worsened. Among patients with ongoing symptoms, 21% had problems with personal care, 27% had problems performing household tasks, and 34% had pain on movement. Treatment made no difference in outcome.

Psychological disorder and mortality in French older adults: do social relations modify the association?
Article Abstract:
Social relations, according to a study in France, do not significantly change the depression-mortality associations for men or women,. The depression-mortality effect has cut by 12.8% in men. The findings seem to be not compatible with the buffering hypothesis. The buffering hypothesis would bring the expectation of social relations decreasing the depression mortality association. Independent effects from the two factors exist. Older depressed men not socially connected have a greater risk of dying earlier. Data are from the Personnes Agees Quid (PAQUID) study and normal and pathological aging; the study involved 3,777 randomly selected people at least 65 years old in southwest France.
