Oral analgesics: aspirin and paracetamol
Article Abstract:
Nurse prescribers in the UK are able to prescribe the oral analgesics paracetamol and aspirin. The latter acts by suppressing the formation of prostaglandins, which play a key role in inflammation and pain. Gastric irritation and bleeding are common side-effects of aspirin, and tinnitus, dizziness, vomiting and deafness can also arise if aspirin is given in large doses. Paracetamol is an effective analgesic and antipyretic, but its anti-inflammatory effect is limited. It is vital to prescribe paracetamol with care, as toxic levels are not much higher than therapeutic levels.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to assess how two colleges are teaching infection control procedures to their student nurses and health care assistants (HCAs), and two wards were visited. The time spent teaching infection control varied from one hour to 14 hours, and the theory often did not correspond to the practice on the wards, where the procedures varied. Both nurses and HCAs has unrealistic ideas about micro-organisms, with 72% having a poor understanding of how infections spread. Recommendations are made for improving this situation.
