Osteoarthritis of the hip and acetabular dysplasia
Article Abstract:
People may be predisposed to develop hip osteoarthritis, a chronic and degenerative inflammatory condition of the joints, by such disorders as congenital hip dislocation, septic (infected) arthritis, trauma, and some metabolic diseases. However, fewer than half of the cases of osteoarthritis can be accounted for by these disorders. Several studies support the idea that even mild dysplasia (abnormal structure) of the acetabulum (the socket part of the hip joint) can underlie osteoarthritis. However, this theory is not supported by all research reports. To better examine this hypothesis, urograms (X-rays of the urinary tract) taken of 1,516 men, of which 1,306 had visualizable hip joints, were assessed. Osteoarthritis was indicated by a narrowed joint space, while acetabular dysplasia was indicated by a decreased center-edge angle or a shallow acetabular depth. Fifty-three hips had severe narrowing of the joint space, but the prevalence of low center-edge angles in these joints was not greatly different from that of hips with normal joint spaces. The incidence of joint space narrowing also did not correlate with shallowness of the acetabulum. Although a link between acetabular dysplasia and hip osteoarthritis cannot be ruled out from the results, the study suggests that acetabular dysplasia is not an important cause of osteoarthritis in men. Is Behcet's disease triggered by childhood infection?
Article Abstract:
Behcet's syndrome is an inflammation of unknown cause of the small blood vessels characterized by recurrent ulceration of the mucus membranes of the mouth, throat and genitals, by damaged areas of skin and by various eye problems. Thirty patients suffering from this syndrome were compared with similar healthy subjects. It was discovered that an increased risk of Behcet's syndrome is associated with the following: removal of the tonsils, a history of cold sores, a large number of siblings, late birth order, travel to countries with a high incidence of the disease and first sexual intercourse before the age of 16. These findings are compatible with the possibility that the disease is triggered by infection during childhood or adolescence of a patient predisposed to the disease by inherited characteristics of his or her disease-fighting immune system.

Osteoarthritis of the hip joint and acetabular dysplasia in women
Article Abstract:
Osteoarthritis of the hip joint may not be caused by acetabular dysplasia in elderly women. Acetabular dysplasia refers to abnormal tissue development in the area where the thigh bone fits into the hip bone. A study of 393 hip joints in women aged 60 to 75 years who had x-rays in conjunction with intravenous urography found that the minimal joint space (MJS) measurements denoting osteoarthritis were not significantly associated with acetabular dysplasia. Center-edge angle and acetabular depth measurements were not associated with acetabular dysplasia. These findings agree with the findings of a previous study of acetabular dysplasia in elderly men.
