Outbreaks of aseptic meningitis associated with echoviruses 9 and 30 and preliminary surveillance reports on enterovirus activity -- United States, 2003
Article Abstract:
There were 365 cases of viral meningitis caused by enteroviruses in the US as of August 7, 2003. Meningitis is an infection in the brain. Enteroviruses are normally found in the gastrointestinal tract. Enteroviral meningitis is a relatively benign form of meningitis that does not cause severe illness.

Aseptic meningitis outbreak associated with echovirus 9 among recreational vehicle campers-Connecticut, 2003
Article Abstract:
Aseptic meningitis is an inflammation of the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord, and is caused by a virus, most frequently an enterovirus. Echovirus 9 was predominate enterovirus serotype circulating in the eastern United States during 2003 and was identified as the likely etiologic agent.

Echovirus Type 13--United States, 2001
Article Abstract:
Outbreaks of meningitis caused by echovirus 13 in 2001 in Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, and Tennessee are reported. These are the first echovirus 13 outbreaks in the US. Echoviruses belong to a group of viruses called Enteroviruses.
