Oximetry: state-of-the-art
Article Abstract:
Oximetry offers the accurate measurement of hemoglobin saturation. The two major classes of oximeters are the co-oximeter and the pulse oximeter, and there are portable and stationary models for each class. Co-oximetry generally provides more accurate results. Although pulse oximetry is less invasive and demanding, it cannot assess acid-base status or changes in alveolar ventilation. Assessment teams should consider cost-effectiveness and institutional needs when choosing an oximeter.

Chest pain observation units
Article Abstract:
Chest pain observation units may reduce costs by separating patients with low risks of heart attack from those with high risks. Chest pain patients with low risks of heart attack can be transferred after observation to lower intensity care units. High risk chest pain patients can be transferred to critical care and intensive care units after observation. Use of precoronary care units may be the setting for observation of chest pain patients.
