Pain in the marriage
Article Abstract:
Carbon monoxide poisoning may imitate heart conditions. An elderly couple with symptoms of chest pain and shortness of breath were taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment. The man had symptoms indicating acute myocardial ischemia (heart attack) and the previously healthy wife also reported slight chest pain. Her examination also revealed signs of ischemic heart disease. The doctor thought that her distress over her husband's condition caused her to experience chest pain. The couple was treated for two days in the hospital, and discharged to their home. Two days later, they both came back to the hospital with similar symptoms. A detailed history of their home environment revealed that they used two kerosene heaters in an unventilated apartment, and the weather was cold at the time of their hospital admissions. The patients' carboxyhemoglobin levels indicated carbon monoxide poisoning. They were treated with 100% oxygen, and the heart symptoms resolved. Doctors should include environmental factors when diagnosing patients with similar symptoms who are from the same environment.

A twinning combination
Article Abstract:
Communities in the UK are forming relationships with other communities in foreign countries at an increasing pace, almost 1,600 for the 541 local authorities. The collapse of barriers to Eastern Europe has encouraged many local councils to seek relationships and offer assistance there. The Local Government International Bureau helps coordinate these efforts and seeks acceptance for 'twinning' and the encouragement of better international relations on a local, personal level.
