Pain, plasticity, and premature birth: a prescription for permanent suffering?
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the implications and later life effects of painful invasive procedures that are resorted to in caring for newborn infants undergoing intensive care. Research reveals that because of the plasticity of supraspinal foci involvement, repetitive pain during neonatal period alters immature brain and subsequent abnormal behavior in adulthood.

Several in vitro experiments suggest that the transient receptor potential A1 (TRPA1) ion channel senses various noxious stimuli. Many of these findings are borne out in mice, in line with the notion that TRPA1 inhibitors might be useful in treating pain.
