Painful facts
Article Abstract:
A West Berkshire Health Authority team has been set up to investigate how pain is managed in an acute unit. Some 51 qualified nurses participated in a study of three trauma wards and a 'cold' surgery ward with a total of 68 beds. The goals of the study were to look at how pain management was carried out in the wards and then set training methods. The study found that most nurses assess pain requirements by listening to the patient and by the appearance of the patient.

Do we need research?
Article Abstract:
There is a mixed reaction to whether results achieved by nursing research into objective sciences are useful. Research into physical care of patients may be of use, but when research is applied to human sciences, it can produce conflicting opinions about a particular hypothesis. A specific research project on a small scale can result in improving the particular field it was carried out in, but large-scale research can be inconclusive.

An evaluation of nursing research
Article Abstract:
In the 1992 Research Selectivity Exercise, nursing received an average rating of 2.22 on a scale of one-to-five. The poor rating is attributed to a variety of issues including, lack of time, funds, and research skills; the practice discipline status; and the large number of new institutions. The majority of nursing research tends to focus on nursing behaviour, and it tends to have sample sizes of under 200.
