Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria Cells in Patients with Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes
Article Abstract:
Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is better diagnosed by flow cytometric analysis than by the Ham test, especially in patients with myelodysplasia, a condition of minor defects in the spinal cord. PNH is an acquired hematopoietic stem-cell disorder in which blood cells which are deficient in certain components appear intermittently in the urine, usually at night and usually for several days at a time. Of 115 patients with aplastic anemia, 22% showed signs of PNH. A similar percentage (23%) was found in patients with myelodysplasia. These results suggest that these patients might respond well to immunosuppressive therapy.
