Phantoms of the hospital
Article Abstract:
The NHS and Community Care Act of 1990 introduced Health Care Assistants (HCAs) as a recognised level of nursing staff. HCAs are increasingly being used to perform jobs that are usually undertaken by qualified nurses. The average pay of HCAs is 8,926 pounds sterling, which is well below the starting pay of an 18-year-old nurse. The average age of an HCA is 40-plus, with many having previous nursing experience. HCAs want to see pay policy changed from a local issue to a national structure with the backing of registered nurses.

The overseas nurse: What impact has overseas recruitment had on nursing in the UK?
Article Abstract:
The number of nurses from countries like India and Philippines joining the NHS has increased over the years and if the internationally recruited nurses were to leave UK, NHS would not be in a position to fill the gap with its home-grown nurses. However, the number of nurses coming into NHS has an impact on UK practice and UK nurses have to adapt to new colleagues with different cultural behavior and work practices.
