Physicians urged to manage pain more effectively
Article Abstract:
Physicians need better education on pain management, according to physicians at a press briefing of the American Medical Assn. About 67% of cancer patients in a recent study would prefer suicide over chronic pain in the current environment, but many physicians have not been trained in pain management. Many fear prescriptions for narcotics will be scrutinized by the Drug Enforcement Agency. There is also a lack of examination of muscles in the diagnosis of pain, despite the role of muscles in many common painful conditions.

AMA issues first three physician protocols on family violence
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) has issued three protocols to guide physicians who suspect their patients are victims of family violence. The guidelines address child sexual abuse, child physical abuse and spouse abuse and recommend what physicians can do. The protocols stress, for example, that physicians should keep good medical records in case such information is needed in a trial. Additionally, the AMA is working on a protocol that deals with abuse of the elderly.
