Physiological properties of resistant starch
Article Abstract:
A study was done on the physiological properties of resistant starch (RS). It was shown that only 80% of oats cooked as porridge was digested in vitro and a large fraction of starch was left for bacterial fermentation in the large intestines. It was shown that the remaining amount consist mainly of beta-glucans. It was concluded that there is only partial degradation of resistant starch in the alimentary tract but the remaining undigested portion is also utilized as bulking agent in the gut.

Influence of non-starch polysaccharides on gastrointestinal endocrine mechanisms
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the effects of guar gum, cellulose and gum arabic on the release of enteroglucagon (EG) and gastrin in ad libitum and metal-fed male Wistar rats finds that the intake of some soluble non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) stimulates the generation of enteroglucagon (EG) from the intestinal mucosa. The viscous, highly fermentable EG changes the conditions within the intestinal lumen indirectly. Luminal nutrients release the EG peptide from the endocrine cells.

Dietary fat intake and plasma lipid levels in adolescents
Article Abstract:
The plasma cholesterol levels of 54 British adolescents were assessed regarding their relationship with dietary habits. Results show that subjects of the study had lower cholesterol levels than that reported for British and Swiss children but it was higher than for American adolescents. Levels for boys are not significantly higher than girls but contain a higher percentage of fat. Therefore, the males may benefit more from dietary guidance.
