Politicians' health: what the public needs to know
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association's Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs has published guidelines regarding the proprieties of public disclosure of a given patient's medical condition. Interpretation of these guidelines is especially critical when the patient in question is a political figure whose future may be compromised by serious medical concerns. Former senator and one-time presidential nomination candidate Paul Tsongas, who died from lymphoma in 1997, failed to fully disclose his disease history during his 1992 campaign; several U.S. presidents have similarly failed to disclose.

AMA poll: the more patients know, the less they want suicide aid
Article Abstract:
Only 13% of interviewees in a December 1996 American Medical Association (AMA) poll would want physician-assisted suicide if they were terminally ill, and most respondents disapprove of euthanasia, the practice of ending the lives of terminally ill patients without their request. The AMA poll also indicates that, given detailed information about end-of-life options, most respondents would not opt for suicide aid, despite polls that show a slim majority of Americans in favor of legalizing physician-assisted suicide.

Your advocate in court
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) is recognized for its lobbying and advocacy efforts before Congress, but the organization's involvement in litigation and regulatory activities is an often overlooked but nonetheless crucial component of the AMA. In 1996 and 1997 the AMA has been an active voice against the legalization of physician-assisted suicide. A history of AMA litigation activities is presented.
