New year, new image
Article Abstract:
The image of nurses has changed between 1984 and the end of 1999 according to a MORI opinion poll which updates a poll taken in 1984. In 1984 nursing was considered low level work for women, with a third of respondents believing that nursing is more suited to women. In 1999 just 13% were of this view. In the latest poll 6% thought of nurses as having sex appeal, versus 10% in 1984.

Plagued by prejudice
Article Abstract:
Inadequate training means that many community nurses feel they are poorly equipped to nurse AIDS and HIV patients, according to a government-funded research project carried out by Manchester University. The 39 health-care workers responding to the study cited problems including their embarrassment and lack of knowledge about gay relationships; late referrals; and the failure to involve district nurses in case conferences and strategic planning of services for AIDS and HIV patients. Users complained of conflicting advice; insensitivity; and breaches of confidentiality.

Politics: one in three nurse voters say they trust Labour, but only 5% trust the Conservatives
Article Abstract:
There is a lack of faith by nurses in any political party according to a survey. However, one in three nurses said they would trust Labour, with only 5% trusting the Conservatives.44% of nurses felt there would not be a national health service in 10 years' time. 51% said their vocation influenced their voting intentions, and nurses in Scotland are the most political. However the north-south divide that characterises other sectors of society is not apparent in nursing.
