Porcelain-fused-to-metal vs. nonmetal crowns
Article Abstract:
Reliable nonmetal crowns for dental restoration are highly desirable, but dentists largely have been disappointed with these alternatives to porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) dental prostheses. All-ceramic crowns look very good, but they are highly prone to early fracture. Polymer crowns similarly have been unsatisfactory. Nonmetal restorations are preferred by some patients, cause fewer allergic and toxic reactions, and may be esthetically superior. Nonmetal crowns wear opposing teeth less than PFM crowns, and may be preferable in jaw-clenching and teeth-grinding patients.
