Reference data for head circumference-for-length in preterm low-birth-weigh infants
Article Abstract:
A chart of head circumference-for-length has been developed for premature low-birth-weight infants. Measurements were made at nine ages between birth and 36 months of gestation-adjusted age in 867 premature infants born weighing less than 2,500 grams. Tables and charts were developed for each sex and for infants weighing 1,500 grams or less at birth and infants weighing 1,501 to 2,500 grams. Data can be used to evaluate both appropriate-for-gestational-age and small-for-gestational-age infants. Head circumference-for-length may be more useful than head circumference-for-weight because weight may change rapidly over a short period.

Score for neonatal acute physiology and phlebotomy blood loss predict erythrocyte transfusions in premature infants
Article Abstract:
Premature newborns who are sicker and who have more blood draws appear more likely to require transfusions. Identifying these infants would prove helpful in determining who might benefit from treatment to stimulate red blood-cell production. Researchers reviewed the medical records of 47 infants weighing 1,500 grams or less at birth. Twenty-two required transfusions. High scores at seven days on an evaluation test of physical status and greater average blood loss from blood sampling accurately identified 86% of the infants requiring transfusions and 88% of the infants who did not require transfusions.
