Use of Norplant contraceptive implants in the immediate postpartum period: safety and tolerance
Article Abstract:
Norplant can be implanted before hospital discharge after childbirth without causing serious complications. A group of 250 women desiring Norplant were randomly assigned to have Norplant inserted before hospital discharge or at the four to six week postpartum visit. All women had given birth vaginally, were not breastfeeding, had not hemorrhaged, and were free of bleeding disorders and other contraindications to Norplant. Women kept diaries of bleeding and side effects such as headaches, nausea, acne, abnormal hair growth, or hair loss. The immediate insertion group experienced heavier postpartum bleeding, but hemoglobin values were similar between the two groups at six weeks. The immediate insertion group reported more headaches and acne, but this was within the range reported by Norplant users in general. Early insertion could protect against unwanted pregnancy.
