Potentially asphyxiating conditions and spastic cerebral palsy in infants of normal birth weight
Article Abstract:
Conditions that reduce the oxygen supply to the fetus may increase the risk of cerebral palsy. Researchers compared the birth records of 46 children with cerebral palsy and 378 healthy children. Eight of the 46 children with cerebral palsy had quadriplegia and all eight had been born with the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around their neck. This occurred in only 15 of the 378 healthy children. Other potential causes of asphyxia were uncommon and were just as likely to occur in the healthy children as those with cerebral palsy.

Magnesium sulfate tocolysis and risk of neonatal death
Article Abstract:
Magnesium sulfate does not appear to increase the risk of death in premature infants. Magnesium sulfate is used to treat premature labor and a complication of pregnancy called preeclampsia. Researchers analyzed the use of magnesium sulfate in 128 premature deliveries. Fifty-three premature infants died and 75 survived to the age of three and did not have cerebral palsy. Six percent of the infants who died had been exposed to magnesium sulfate but so had 36% of the infants who survived.

Magnesium sulfate for tocolysis and risk of spastic cerebral palsy in premature children born to women without preeclampsia
Article Abstract:
Magnesium sulfate did not reduce the rate of cerebral palsy in the babies of pregnant women in premature labor. Among 170 children with cerebral palsy and 288 without, about 60% of the mothers in both groups had received magnesium sulfate during labor.
