Power to the parents
Article Abstract:
Parents are often given conflicting advice about the care of young children by various individuals, professional groups and agencies. Parents should be able to get the information they need and know how to use it, and health visitors and community paediatric nurses are in key positions to determine possible health risks and play a significant part in health gain. Both nurses and health visitors have pioneered several initiatives such as health education packs, school health faxes and the launch of parent held records.

The long shift
Article Abstract:
Government officials have assumed that shifting the focus from hospital to primary and preventative care will lower hospital services costs to the community. The savings will go towards improved community health services. However, some believe that primary health care services may be more expensive and increase referrals to hospitals. Nurses will face a more challenging post in the community, helping to meet the requirements of patients who need specialised nursing.
