New patients: how many are there and where do they come from?
Article Abstract:
The Quarterly Survey of Dental Practice is a survey designed to provide the American Dental Association with information about the economic aspects of private dentistry; as such, it is concerned with the number of patients seen by dentists, the services they receive, and the number of members of the dental care team. Results are presented from several years of these reports, from January 1985 through December 1989. During that time, each dentist saw approximately 15 new patients per month, and they made up about 7.5 percent of all patient visits. However, these data represent averages including new dentists (all of whose patients are new) and dentists who may soon retire (who see fewer new patients). August tended to be the busiest month for new patients (average, 16), and December, the least busy (average, 12). Between December and March, new patient visits increased, then declining between August and December. Most (71.8 percent) new patients were referrals from current patients; the second most common source was advertising (11.1 percent). Few (7.1 percent) new patients came as referrals from other dentists. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)

Is the Internet useful for clinical practice?
Article Abstract:
Many dentists use the Internet to keep up with advances in dental research and to communicate with other dentists. This was the finding of a survey of 314 dentists who regularly participated in the Internet Dental Forum, an Internet discussion list for dentists. Although most used the Internet at home and at the office, only 5% used it in the treatment area. Some used the Internet to answer patients' questions or to provide patients with information. However, most used it to keep up with dental research and to reduce their feeling of professional isolation.
