Pre-operative fasting
Article Abstract:
Research into pre-operative fasting has revealed little change in practice since initial research in 1972. Both studies found prolonged fasting often occurred despite associated dangers. Research has established the advantages of minimum fasting to avoid post-operative complications and speed recovery. However, interviews with 12 anaesthetists, 38 nurses and 29 patients etsablished no uniform policy of pre-operative fasting. Traditional routines precluded individual patient care. Patients' fasting periods varied between six and 23 hours. However, seven experienced nurses did employ a more individual regime.
