Predictors of hysterectomy: an Australian study
Article Abstract:
Women who go to a doctor because of pelvic pain, menstrual disorders or heaving uterine bleeding are most likely to have a hysterectomy. This was the conclusion of a survey of 3,096 women and 366 doctors. Women with endometriosis, heavy uterine bleeding, pelvic pain or uterine fibroids were two to four times more likely to have a hysterectomy. Smokers were three times more likely to have one.

Contractile activity, membrane potential, and cytoplasmic calcium in human uterine smooth muscle in the third trimester of pregnancy and during labor
Article Abstract:
Between week 28 and the final week of pregnancy, uterine muscle becomes more and more active, according to researchers who used microelectrodes on strips of uterine tissue taken during cesarean deliveries. Prostaglandin F stimulates uterine contraction but then immediately inhibits it to allow the uterus to relax in between contractions.
