This indicates that more training is needed to help new doctors care for HIV infection, drug addiction, nursing home patients, and chronic pain.

Market Forces and Unsponsored Research in Academic Health Centers
Article Abstract:
A drop in patient care revenues may affect the ability of academic health centers to fund internal research. Academic health centers are hospitals that are associated with a medical school. Many faculty at academic health centers use university funds to do research and some of the money comes from patient care. A survey of 2,336 research faculty at 117 academic health centers found that 43% received university money to do research. Faculty in competitive health care markets received less institutional money to do research compared to those in less competitive areas.
