Amplified DNA Testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases
Article Abstract:
The ability to prevent spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) among adolescents has been given a dramatic technological aid: DNA amplification tests. The first tests approved by the Food and Drug Administration are for detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections, and a test for diagnosing presence of Trichomonas vaginalis should be available before long. Sexually transmitted diseases are a major cause oif illness among adolescents, especially young women. Without DNA amplification, diagnosis and screening for STD's involves invasive procedures such as pelvic examination for the young women and urethral swabbing for the males. Amplified DNA tests can detect organisms in urine, vaginal fluid or discharge, or urethral secretions.

Filling in the gaps through research
Article Abstract:
Two recent publications, the "AMA Guidelines for Adolescent Preventative Services (GAPS)" and "Bright Futures: National Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children and Adolescents," together with the revision of the "Guide to Clinical Preventive Services," provide three sets of guidelines for adolescent preventative health care. However, the effectiveness and applicability of these recommendations in various practice settings and adolescent populations require study. For example, little is known about the impact of a confidentiality statement or how best to interact with parents.
