Prevention is better than cure
Article Abstract:
Patients from two rural GP surgeries in Thetford, England, have participated in a pilot scheme assessing the potential for prevention of allergic disease in newborn children. It was established that there is a need to boost patient awareness of allergic disease and to make more information available about secondary preventive care for newborn children in families where risk levels are high. Three-quarters of all households surveyed had animals, indicating that there is an increased risk of a newborn child who is exposed to a pet becoming sensitized.

Prevention of complications related to contact lens wear
Article Abstract:
It is vital that people who wear contact lenses are given adequate information about preventing the development of problems such as Acanthamoeba keratatis, corneal abrasions and corneal ulcers. Medical and surgical means of treating these problems are not always effective, so it is best to focus on ensuring that they do not develop at all. Nurses can play a key role in promoting ocular health, and advice must be tailored to the individual in order to be fully effective.

TB: cure, care and control
Article Abstract:
More than 5,000 new cases of tuberculosis (TB) have been notified in the UK every year since 1987, and the incidence of TB has risen dramatically among the poorest population groups. The disease can only be successfully treated if the correct anti-tuberculosis drugs are prescribed and the patient follows the treatment properly. It is important that contacts are traced and patients are monitored for some time after initial treatment.
