Prevention of bacterial endocarditis: recommendations by the American Heart Association
Article Abstract:
The American Heart Association (AHA) has updated the recommendations for antibiotic use to prevent the development of bacterial endocarditis. Bacterial endocarditis is an infection inside the heart, usually affecting the heart valves. After reviewing relevant literature, the AHA found that most cases of endocarditis are not related to an invasive procedure such as dental work. Patients with heart murmurs may or may not need preventive antibiotics before dental procedures. The AHA has also reduced the dosage required before dental procedures.

Optical immunoassay test for group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis: an office-based, multicenter investigation
Article Abstract:
An optical immunoassay (OIA) test may be just as effective in diagnosing group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal pharyngitis than blood cultures. Researchers tested Strep A OIA on 2,113 patients visiting a doctor's office for suspected streptococcal pharyngitis, commonly called strep throat. The OIA test was more sensitive than blood culture, although it is also more expensive. However, its use would eliminate the need to do confirmatory blood cultures. Blood cultures are often done to confirm the results of other less sensitive tests.
