Making waves
Article Abstract:
Fishermen need to be taught how to deal with serious illness or injury because of the isolated nature of their job. The Department of Trade has established a medical training course of fishermen which teaches a range of life saving techniques as well as basis first aid and the administration of some drugs. The course lasts for six hours, although skippers and captains are required to undertake a three day course which covers more serious medical techniques and decision making processes.

Article Abstract:
An airway blocked by a foreign object can usually be cleared by coughing. Failing that, five sharp slaps between the patient's shoulder blades, or abdominal thrusts should dislodge the object. Advice on first aid treatment for myocardial infarction, bleeding, severed body parts, fractures, burns and scalds, paediatric resuscitation, and paediatric choking is also given.
