Professional tennis helped prepare her for medicine
Article Abstract:
A tennis player who became a pediatrician found that her experience with discipline helped prepare her for the stress of medical school. Athletes who learn to take the blame for losses may find this ability useful to explain rejection, for which they might otherwise blame discrimination. Also, in the tradition of "the show must go on," athletes and physicians learn to carry on in spite of suffering from personal loss.

Physician tells of her struggle to leave abusive husband
Article Abstract:
A battered wife who became a physician tries to understand why she permitted the abuse for so long. In this instance, the respect earned from patients and colleagues inspired a woman to pack up her children and leave an abusive husband. Physicians can give battered women assistance with realistic suggestions, such as a place to stay instead of remaining in the intolerable situation.
