The faux profil (oblique view) of the hip in the standing position. Contribution to the evaluation of osteoarthritis of the adult hip
Article Abstract:
The faux profil (FP) oblique radiograph of the osteoarthritic hip is highly effective at revealing joint-space narrowing, compared to the standard anterior-posterior (AP) view. Researchers evaluated x-ray images of 58 hips with osteoarthritis and joint-space narrowing. The FP view, in which the patient stands and rotates one foot 65 degrees outward, showed narrowing in 91% of the hips, while the AP view showed narrowing in only 62% of films. Placing the patient in the FP position while performing radiography produces diagnostic images of the femur, femoral neck, and acetabulum.

Osteoarthritis of the hip: agreement between joint space width measurements oon standing and supine conventional radiographs
Article Abstract:
Radiographically measuring the width of the joint space in the hip with the patient standing produces very similar results to those obtained when the patient is lying down. Doctors use x-rays of the hip joint spaces to assess the progress of disease in patients with arthritis. Researchers compared radiographs taken in standing and supine positions in patients with osteoarthritis, and found that the standing position produced images showing about 7% greater joint space width in osteoarthritic hips. Small changes of this magnitude may not be clinically significant.
