Prognostic Indicators for Coronary Artery Disease: Ready for the Bedside?
Article Abstract:
Further research is needed before two indicators of increased mortality from heart disease can be recommended as screening tools. Doctors are interested in finding biological characteristics that place certain people at high risk of dying from heart disease. Two such characteristics were identified in 1999. One study found that patients with minor abnormalities on an ECG had a higher risk of dying several years later. Another showed that an abnormal heart response to exercise could also predict those at high risk of dying. However, it is not clear what treatment could be devised to prevent these deaths.

Serial Evaluation of the SOFA Score to Predict Outcome in Critically Ill Patients
Article Abstract:
The Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score can identify which critically ill patients are likely to die within a few days of admission to an intensive care unit. According to a study of 352 ICU patients, those with a high score on admission that increased within 48 hours had the highest risk of death.

Validation of the Framingham Coronary Heart Disease Prediction Scores: Results of a Multiple Ethnic Groups Investigation
Article Abstract:
The mathematical tools developed from the Framingham study for predicting an individual's risk of coronary heart disease work well in whites and African-Americans but not in other ethnic groups. For Native Americans, Asian-Americans, and Hispanic-Americans, the formulas would have to be changed.
