Program evaluation of a unit reengineered for patient-focused care
Article Abstract:
The transition to a patient-focused care model in a hospital setting seems to have been moderately successful. An analysis of collaborative efforts, patient and staff satisfaction, length of hospital stay, and cost was performed in a 42-bed orthopedic unit redesigned according to the patient-focused model. Hospital staff reported decreased efforts at collaboration but increased job satisfaction one year after implementation. Measurements of patient satisfaction improved, hospital stays were shorter, and costs remained the same after implementation.

Issues in patient-focused care for the respiratory care practitioner
Article Abstract:
The effects on respiratory care practitioner (RSP) roles as a result of implementing patient-focused care (PFC) models may vary but the current trends seem positive. Possible positive effects include expanded and more independent job responsibilities. Possible negative effects include job elimination or reduction in responsibilities. Most polled RSPs have not experienced any changes in their roles. RSPs may be well suited for the PFC model because of their efficiency, portability, and technical as well as interpersonal skills.
