Improving outpatient psychiatric care
Article Abstract:
Managed care organizations need to ensure that all their members who have a psychiatric disorder receive proper treatment. A study of outpatient psychiatric services in the US and Ontario, Canada, found that less money is spent on these services in Ontario but those with the greatest need receive the most services. The US spends more money on psychiatric services, but the money is spent on those whose mental illness is not severe. Those with severe mental illness are likely to have no insurance. Even private insurance limits benefits for psychiatric services.
