Promoting health in IV drug users
Article Abstract:
Nurses have an opportunity and a responsibility to give health information to intravenous drug users on the occasions they come into contact with this population group. The nurse's approach should be one of collaboration with the patient. The nurse should ascertain the user's intentions regarding drug use, helping them to make informed choices wherever possible. The nurse can then offer health education pertaining to the user's choice. This health promotion may relate to a decision to stop using drugs, to continue injecting, or to switch to the use of orally-administered drugs.

Out of the shadows
Article Abstract:
A supervisor of night charge nurses, concerned about the isolation of night nursing staff, set up a support network in North Yorkshire, England. Night charge nurses have to work with minimal resources and minimal supervision. A widespread perception of night work having a lower value increases the feelings of stress and isolation. The support group operates within an existing development network and, whilst working to promote the role of the night charge nurse, it has also fostered informal contacts which benefit communication on issues such as bed availability.
