Promoting solidarity between generations: the nurse's role
Article Abstract:
The care of elderly patients is similar throughout the countries of the European Union, with the elderly generally more vulnerable to discrimination and social deprivation than other groups of patients. Services for the elderly are usually based on assumptions of their needs rather than through consultation, with nurses having their own ageist attitudes towards those in their care which could create unneccessary barriers. The elderly are themselves becoming more assertive, however, and nurses should become more aware of the potential for solidarity with the elderly.

Change in consciousness
Article Abstract:
There is a danger that the complementary therapies to which millions of people in Britain have turned will be seen as merely another treatment whereas they are actually windows through which nurses can express their healing potential, consciousness and intention. One complementary therapy, therapeutic touch, is actually based on intent and consciousness. Therapeutic touch is based on the premise that it is the consciousness with which the therapy is administered, rather than the technique itself, that places patients in the optimum position for healing themselves.

The named-nurse initiative: what is the point?
Article Abstract:
The named-nurse concept was promoted to improve patient care and job satisfaction for nurses. It aims to create a therapeutic relationship with the patient, although it cannot be assumed that therapeutic nursing will automatically emerge. The organisational aspects must be right and nurses must be able to adapt to the paitent's wishes and needs.
