Psychological treatment of anabolic-androgenic steroid-dependent individuals
Article Abstract:
Methods have been devised for the psychological treatment of anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS)-dependent individuals simliar to those used for eating disorders, substance abuse and narcissistic personality disorders. For early treatment, therapists should be aware of other substances that the patient may be dependent on and substances that the patient may substitute for AAS. For treatment approaches, confrontation should be avoided, relationships established and group treatment encouraged. For the therapist, he or she should have a good physique to avoid rejection and should include a co-therapist with a different build.
