Psychosocial aspects of chronic, clinically unconfirmed vulvovaginitis
Article Abstract:
To learn more regarding the psychological characteristics of women with complaints of chronic or recurrent vulvovaginitis (inflammation of the vagina or vulva) that is not confirmed by laboratory tests, 26 women were studied. They were part of a larger group of women with symptoms of vulvovaginitis; among the remaining patients (57) the diagnosis was confirmed by test results. All of the patients (83) and 32 healthy control subjects completed several standardized tests concerning medical symptoms, depression, and adjustment, as well as questionnaires about sexual behavior, menstruation, contraception, and related factors. The women were followed for at least six months to verify the presence of clinical findings. Results showed that more women with unconfirmed than confirmed vaginitis reported sensations of burning (77 percent versus 42 percent, respectively). In general, women with unconfirmed vulvovaginitis had higher scores on tests for depression, distress, and medical symptoms, than women with confirmed disease or controls. They also had more discomfort during intercourse, although the frequencies of intercourse and orgasm did not differ among the groups. Six of ten women with unconfirmed diagnoses accepted psychiatric referral and were found to have a major depression or dysthymia (a depressive condition). The results indicate that clinicians should attempt to evaluate psychosocial factors in women with unconfirmed chronic vulvovaginitis. Neurodevelopment of children exposed in utero to antidepressant drugs
Article Abstract:
Children who are exposed to antidepressant drugs while in the womb may not experience neurodevelopmental delays. Researchers studied the language and behavioral development and intelligence of the children of 80 mothers who took tricyclic antidepressants during pregnancy, of 55 children whose mothers took fluoxetine during pregnancy, and of 84 children whose mothers did not take any potentially harmful drugs during pregnancy. Children whose mothers took antidepressants during pregnancy had similar language and behavioral development and IQ to unexposed children. Exposure to the drugs during pregnancy, even during the first trimester, did not affect children.
